Standards of Care

Two Person Collaboration with Maddie Alexander

August 26, 2023 For Art in The Open 2023 artists Maddie Alexander and Adrien Crossman created Standards Of Care, a collaborative print media-based installation that interrogated contemporary and historical access to trans healthcare.

The artists built a layered installation through collage of printed matter and spray paint, consisting of new work that combined original imagery with archival material referencing both the contemporary state and history of trans healthcare. The work envisioned a future utopia, in terms of access and quality of trans healthcare, while prompting the audience with questions, asking viewers to reflect on our current system. Alexander and Crossman focused on creating this work through accessible modes of print media, both as a nod to historical methods of sharing knowledge amongst queer and trans communities (zines, discrete subscription publications, etc.) and as a means of providing take-away prints for the community.

Maddie Alexander is a trans artist, arts facilitator, archivist, and educator, who is currently a guest residing in Mi'kma'ki. Their artistic practice focuses on embodied queer and trans experiences while exploring larger themes of archiving, queer representation and analogue to digital technological processes.
